The Jerusalem Ancient History Home Page

Another source of information about a new chronology is The Jerusalem Ancient History Home Page which outlines the reasons a new chronology is needed then links to 'On the Care and Feeding of Revision Hypotheses' which goes into a fair amount of detail about a proposed chronology.

Only a brief outline will be given here for the full text is readily available on the web.

The site is written by Lisa Aaronson (now Liel). She begins by defining four levels at which the reconstruction of ancient history can be approached.
The Global Level- the overall framework of ancient history - two contenders:
- the Bible
- the archaeological stratigraphic record
The Dynastic Level- individual nations and their interactions in their area
- locating dynasties or phases within a nation
The Individual Level - dealing with individuals - mostly kings
- some others as well eg priests, architects, nobles
The Particular Level - comparisons year-by-year
- comparisons event-by-event

After some notes concerning Velikovsky and Alter-Egos Aaronson's discussion turns to the unsuitability of Egyptian chronology as a global framework.

Following this she outlines the way in which the Jerusalem Ancient History operates at all four levels.

Global levelthe stratigraphic sequence of the Land of Israel is used, in association with the internal biblical chronology.

Aaronson argues that the Bible has two qualifications in this area.
It is the local history of the Land of Israel.
It provides a coherant history of the Land of Israel from the beginning of the formation of nation-states almost through the end of the Persian period, complete with chronological notes.

A number of dates are derived from scripture and their appropriate places in the Bronze and Iron Ages defined.

Dynastic level

Here Aaronson relates a number of dates to the Bronze and Iron Ages for
Egypt
Mesopotamia
Elam
Turkey
Greece
The site is valuable. It is quite specific about dating Aaronson has raised a number of issues in chronology which are very interesting.

Go and look at the site. It will be worth your while.

She has another site dealing with the chronology of the Israelite Monarchies. It is useful because of the information it contains, but also because it demonstrates how to go about developing a chronology and how to solve problems associated with the dates kings start and end their reigns.
